On this day in 1980, the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness was created when President Carter signed Congress's Central Idaho Wilderness Act. At more than 2.3 million acres, it is the largest wilderness in the Lower 48. The Shoshone, Nez Perce, and Tuka-Deka are among the Native American tribes that have occupied this area. The Main Salmon River was called “The River of No Return” in the days of westward settlement, when fast water and numerous rapids prevented upstream travel for many.
